How Your VA Paycheck Works
Virginia paychecks start with federal income tax withholding using the employee's Form W-4 and IRS 2026 wage-bracket or percentage-method tables in Publication 15-T. FICA is calculated separately: Social Security is 6.2% on 2026 wages up to the SSA taxable maximum of $184,500, and Medicare is 1.45% on all covered wages with no wage cap. Employers must also withhold the 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax once an employee's Medicare wages exceed $200,000 in a calendar year. Virginia uses a graduated individual income tax: 2% on taxable income not over $3,000; 3% on $3,000 to $5,000; 5% on $5,000 to $17,000; and 5.75% on income over $17,000. Virginia's employer withholding tables effective July 2025 apply these state withholding formulas for regular payroll wages. Virginia does not have a statewide employee-paid disability insurance or paid family leave payroll tax that affects standard wage withholding. Estimates assume standard 2026 withholding, single filing status, and no pre-tax deductions; actual paycheck may differ.
