How Your NC Paycheck Works

North Carolina paychecks start with federal income tax withholding. Employers use the employee's Form W-4, pay frequency, and IRS wage bracket or percentage method tables in Publication 15-T to estimate federal withholding. FICA is separate: in 2026, Social Security is withheld at 6.2% from employee wages up to the $184,500 wage base, while Medicare is withheld at 1.45% with no wage cap. Employers must also withhold an extra 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax from wages paid above $200,000 in the calendar year. North Carolina uses a flat individual income tax rate of 3.99% for taxable years after 2025, according to the North Carolina Department of Revenue. North Carolina does not add a separate statewide employee SDI or paid-leave payroll tax; standard wage withholding is therefore federal income tax, FICA, and North Carolina income tax. Estimates assume standard 2026 withholding, single filing status, and no pre-tax deductions; actual paycheck may differ.
