How Your NJ Paycheck Works
New Jersey paychecks start with federal income tax withholding using the employee's Form W-4 and IRS 2026 withholding tables in Publication 15-T. FICA is separate: Social Security is 6.2% up to the 2026 taxable maximum of $184,500, Medicare is 1.45% on all covered wages, and employers must withhold the 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax on wages above $200,000. New Jersey uses a graduated Gross Income Tax with rates ranging from 1.4% to 10.75% for single filers; employers calculate paycheck withholding using NJ-WT instructions and Form NJ-W4 data. New Jersey also has four employee payroll contribution programs: Unemployment Insurance worker contribution, Disability Insurance and Temporary Disability Insurance, Workforce Development and Supplemental Workforce Funds, and Family Leave Insurance. The wage bases and rates for each program are set annually by the New Jersey Department of Labor. These employee payroll deductions may appear on your paycheck but are not included in this estimate. Estimates assume standard 2026 withholding, single filing status, and no pre-tax deductions; actual paycheck may differ.
