9 States With No Income Tax — What You Actually Save (2026)

Last updated:

A no-income-tax state does not eliminate federal withholding or FICA. The table shows modeled take-home at two salaries and the $100,000 savings relative to California and New York.

The nine states with no wage income tax

Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming do not levy state income tax on wages in 2026. New Hampshire taxes interest and dividend income but not wage income for most workers. Tennessee previously taxed investment income but wage income has been exempt for several years.

Without a state withholding line, paychecks in these states show federal income tax, Social Security, and Medicare as the main deductions beyond any pre-tax benefits. That often produces higher net pay than the same salary in California or New York, though other taxes and costs differ by location.

Federal and FICA still apply

No state income tax does not mean no taxes on wages. Social Security is withheld at 6.2% of gross up to the annual wage base. Medicare is 1.45% on all wages. Federal income tax withholding follows IRS Publication 15-T tables based on your W-4 and pay frequency.

Popular destinations for remote workers

Texas and Florida attract remote workers from high-tax states because wage income avoids state withholding. Texas paycheck calculator and Florida calculator model take-home at any salary. Compare against your current state with state comparison tools before relocating — residency rules determine where you owe tax, not just where you wish to pay.

Local taxes in nominally “no tax” states

Most no-income-tax states do not have city wage taxes, but always confirm for your work address. Sales and property taxes are separate from paycheck withholding and vary by county and city.

Business and self-employment in no-tax states

No personal wage tax does not mean no business taxes. Texas franchise tax and other entity-level taxes affect business owners separately from employee paychecks. W-2 employees in no-tax states still benefit from absent state withholding lines.

Military and government workers

Active-duty military and some federal employees have special withholding rules under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act and federal employment statutes. State wage tax exemption lists may not apply uniformly — verify with your finance office if you are in uniformed service.

Part-year residency

Moving into a no-tax state mid-year produces part-year resident returns in the prior state. Withholding during the move may show both states on stubs for a few pay periods. Annual tax reconciles total liability across states.

Using ExactTakeHome for your situation

Every example in this guide uses engine-computed withholding from official 2026 tax tables — IRS Publication 15-T for federal income tax and state employer withholding schedules where state income tax applies. Open the paycheck calculator, select your state, enter your annual salary or hourly equivalent, and adjust filing status, pay frequency, and pre-tax deductions to match your pay stub inputs.

Salary band pages at /salary/ provide quick benchmarks at common amounts. Hourly routes at /hourly/ convert hourly rates to annual gross using 2,080 full-time hours. City guides at /city-salary/ add local wage tax when your work city levies one. Compare pairs at /compare/ when evaluating two states side by side.

Figures here are estimates for planning — not tax advice. Payroll rounding, mid-year law changes, and employer-specific benefit elections can shift your actual stub by small amounts. Consult a qualified tax professional for filing decisions and complex multi-state situations.

Pay frequency reminder

Annual salary and hourly annual equivalents assume steady income across the year. Bonuses, commissions, and mid-year raises change withholding because payroll systems annualize current wages when applying tables. After a raise, expect a few paychecks at blended withholding until year-to-date wages fully reflect the new rate.

Semi-monthly pay (24 checks per year) and biweekly pay (26 checks) produce different per-check gross amounts for the same annual salary. Withholding tables account for frequency — always select your actual pay schedule in the calculator when comparing to your stub.
